Marion (2019)
Graphite on paper
22 x 23 ¼ in.
Cutler’s compositions oscillate between the whimsical and the grotesque. Encumbered by history, societal expectations, fruitless labor, and their own bodies, Cutler’s subjects confront extreme and bizarre physical and psychological states of being. Some figures carry their own decapitated heads in their hands, while others learn to manage grossly elongated limbs, hair, and facial features. In the nearly life-size drawings
Clementine and
Marion … Cutler splits open her subjects’ skulls, exposing their inner thoughts in the most literal sense.
