Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects
I went to Japan in 1985 for the 40th anniversary commemoration of these double tragedies and asked the Hibakushas (survivors of the Atomic Bomb) to write their last messages on their own pillowcases, in their own homes, in their own language. I exhibited these pillowcases (with other pillowcases scripted with dreams and nightmares about nuclear war) ten years later, in 1995, on the facade of the Berkeley Art Museum for the 50th anniversary commemoration.
